Eschenmoser Methenylation

The introduction of a (dimethylamino)methyl group into the alpha-position of a carbonyl group using dimethyl(methylene)ammonium iodide (Eschenmoser's salt), followed by an elimination to the corresponding alpha-methylene carbonyl compound.
